Question
My glass door makes a very loud popping or cracking noise when I put it into or take it out of the hold-open. Is the door closer defective?
Answer
Generally, noise or popping when putting a door into or taking it out of hold open with RTS88 concealed overhead closer has never been a product issue.
There is always some noise with any mechanical hold-open.
Resonance across the door makes it seem worse, especially if it is a glass door.
“Popping” could be a sign that either the arm or patch fitting or rail insert hasn't been properly clamped to the closer with the specified torque, or that the closer isn’t truly secure in the header, etc. Or a combination thereof.
Ensuring that the bottom arm/floor bearing is also truly secure to the door and the floor is also critical, and that all components are plumb, level, and square.
99% of the time, ensuring that proper installation procedures are met and all components are truly secure reduces the sound to an acceptable level.
