This is a forced sustaining initiative that happens to coincide with the E7900 Gen 1 to Gen 2 transition. Due to the obsolescence of the existing HID solution, we are required to move from the older HID SE module to the newer HID OMNIKEY module, which is the component embedded in our locks that enables HID credential reading.
Unfortunately, the new OMNIKEY solution could not be implemented in the older E79N platform. As a result, all new E7900 orders requiring HID support will need to utilize the Gen 2 E792 platform going forward.
One important point to reinforce with customers is that they do not need to upgrade their entire existing system. The lock and gateway simply need to be compatible with one another. Existing E79N locks and Gen 1 gateways can continue to operate alongside new E792 locks and Gen 2 gateway hierarchies within the same overall system.
